The president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, tightened his position vis-a-vis his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro, and assured that the bilateral relationship is going through a critical moment due to the lack of cooperation in security, energy
and border control. In an interview with the magazine Semana, the president stated that Ecuador has had to assume greater costs to reinforce its northern border in the face of the scant control of the Colombian side in the face of drug trafficking, armed groups and illegal economies.
Noboa said that his government allocates around an additional $400 million a year to keep the Armed Forces deployed in border areas, with the objective of containing violence and drug trafficking.
