The president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, tightened his position vis-a-vis his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro, and assured that the bilateral relationship is going through a critical moment due to the lack of cooperation in security, energy

and border control.

In an interview with the magazine Semana, the president stated that Ecuador has had to assume greater costs to reinforce its northern border in the face of the scant control of the Colombian side in the face of drug trafficking, armed groups and illegal economies.

Noboa said that his government allocates around an additional $400 million a year to keep the Armed Forces deployed in border areas, with the objective of containing violence and drug trafficking.

In the energy field, he also questioned
Colombia about electricity prices during the 2024 crisis, assuring that they were significantly higher compared to those of Ecuador

offered in the past in similar situations.

In addition, the president warned of a strong imbalance in the trade balance, with a deficit of USD 1.2 billion, which, he said, affects employment and the Ecuadorian economy.

Finally, Noboa stressed that the problem is not with the Colombian people, but with the lack of concrete actions by the Petro government in the face of organized crime, although he left the door open to dialogue if there is a real commitment to cooperation.
