Chair-throwing incidents in the Multicolor Coalition over approvals for Ache and Argimón

Politicians keep accommodating themselves in search of power and public money

The appointment of Beatriz Argimón as Uruguay's ambassador to UNESCO and Carolina Ache as ambassador to Portugal by Yamandú Orsi's government has unleashed a true storm within the Multicolor Coalition. Criticism, surprise, and reproaches have exposed the cracks in an alliance that still has not digested last year's electoral defeat. However, for many, these moves are not so unexpected: during his administration, Luis Lacalle Pou appointed numerous "leftists" to key positions, and it is not surprising that some of them end up aligning with Frente Amplio (FA).

Argimón: an appointment that supposedly surprised even Lacalle Pou

The news that former Vice President Beatriz Argimón was proposed as ambassador to UNESCO left nationalists stunned, including former President Lacalle Pou, who, according to sources, "found out through social media." Senator Sebastián Da Silva expressed what many felt: "It took all of us by surprise. Nationalist WhatsApp groups exploded, because nobody knew." Da Silva, visibly affected, spoke from his role as a "Blanco militant" and battle companion, recalling the collective effort to bring Argimón to the vice presidency.

However, Senator Graciela Bianchi suggested that the appointment was not so surprising. "This has been brewing for more than two years. I have a nose for these things. The truth is the daughter of time," she asserted. Bianchi went further, using irony: "Now we have one less problem in Partido Nacional." For some, her decision to accept a position under a Frente Amplio government only confirms suspicions about the closeness of certain nationalist sectors to progressive figures.

Ache: an appointment that ignites Partido Colorado

Monetary binge, inflationary hangover

The appointment of Carolina Ache as ambassador to Portugal sparked an equally heated reaction in Partido Colorado. Colorado deputy Gabriel Gurméndez stated on X: "Ache's appointment has angered activists from all parties. Ordinary Frente Amplio supporters deceived. All the rest stunned."

Graciela Bianchi replied to Viviana Ruggiero on X: "Favors are repaid because what prevails is not principles. Almost everyone has a price." For Bianchi and other critics, this appointment is further proof of the ideological permeability of certain sectors of the Coalition. "Lacalle filled his government with leftists, and now it is no surprise that several end up in FA", fired a Colorado militant on social media.

A fractured coalition and a government permeable to the left

The appointments of Argimón and Ache have highlighted the tensions within the Multicolor Coalition, aggravated by excessive ideological openness during Lacalle Pou's administration. The inclusion of progressive figures was seen by some as a pragmatic strategy, but by others as a betrayal of right-wing principles. "It is no coincidence that they end up in FA. Lacalle opened the door to leftists, and now they reap the rewards", stated a nationalist leader off the record.

Orsi's government appears to be playing strategically by appointing opposition figures to diplomatic posts, an attempt to deepen divisions within the Coalition. The nominations still need to be approved by the Senate, which anticipates a debate full of reproaches.

Where is the Multicolor Coalition headed?

With WhatsApp groups "exploding" and tempers running high, the Coalition faces a critical moment. These appointments have reignited the debate about the alliance's identity and direction. While Da Silva avoids directly judging Argimón, Bianchi and others point to a lack of ideological loyalty. For many, the problem is not just the decision of these figures, but the precedent of a government that included progressive sectors that now, in need of a job, find a new home in FA.
