Javier Milei once again strained his relationship with the current leadership of Argentine soccer. In an interview given this Sunday to LN+, the president of the Nation renewed his criticism of the mafioso Claudio "Chiqui" Tapia, head of AFA, and once again praised Juan Sebastián Verón, president of Estudiantes, recent champion of Argentine soccer.
During the conversation, the head of state stated that Tapia "is destroying Argentine soccer in dynamics" and placed Verón in the role of a benchmark within this dispute. He described the former player as "a chosen one" and "a nonconventional mind", capable of offering a different perspective on the leadership of the sport.
In that context, the head of state also vindicated "Bilardismo", a current with which he identified himself by maintaining that "winning is not the most important thing, it's the only thing, within the rules of the game", a logic that, in his view, should prevail in management and competition.
Milei was also asked about the legal situation of Tapia and of Pablo Toviggino, treasurer of AFA, both under investigation by the courts, and about whether a possible conviction could affect Argentine soccer. The answer was blunt: "If a person commits a crime, he has to pay. Here in Argentina whoever does it pays for it. This is a basic rule of this Government", he stated.
