NATO member countries with territory in the Arctic celebrated the launch of the operation "Arctic Sentinel", an initiative aimed at integrating and coordinating allied military activities under a common command in an increasingly strategic region.
The announcement comes after the understanding reached between NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and United States President Donald Trump, in a context of growing geopolitical competition in the High North.
Iceland's Foreign Minister, Thorgerdur Katrin, stated that the Alliance is going through a moment of greater cohesion. "We are more united now than at the beginning of the year", she affirmed before the meeting of defense chiefs in Brussels, where the allies evaluated progress in terms of collective security.
Deterrence against Russia and growing Chinese presence
The central objective of "Arctic Sentinel" is to increase deterrence capacity in the face of:
- Russia's military movements in the north
- The expansion of Russian strategic infrastructure in the Arctic
- China's greater presence, especially in activities linked to resource extraction
Sweden's Defense Minister Pal Jonson supported the initiative because he considers that coordinating existing maneuvers under a single framework strengthens the allied posture. As he explained, the plan will make it possible to increase activity where it is most needed in order to counter Russian pressure and China's growing projection.
From Finland, Minister Antti Hakkanen gave a "warm welcome" to the new approach and emphasized that the defense of the Arctic is not only a regional issue, but a strategic one for all of NATO, including the United States. Finland, whose forces are specially trained to operate in Arctic conditions, is assessing how to contribute to the mission.
Integration of maneuvers that already exist
