The United States Department of Justice reported the arrest of multiple protesters who attacked federal agents in Minnesota

The Attorney General of the United States, Pam Bondi, announced on Wednesday the arrest of 16 people in Minnesota who were accused of assaulting and obstructing federal agents during protests against the immigration crackdown driven by President Donald Trump.

The arrests come amid an increase in violence and direct confrontations with law enforcement in Minneapolis and other areas of the state.

Bondi reported that she was in Minneapolis personally overseeing the operations and confirmed that the detainees were arrested under federal statute 18 U.S. Code § 111, which classifies as a crime the assault, intimidation, or interference with federal officials in the performance of their duties. The statute provides for sentences of up to three years in prison and financial fines, reflecting the seriousness of the charges.

"These people actively resisted and prevented the work of our federal agents", Bondi stated in a message posted on the social network X. The Attorney General added that more arrests are expected, emphasizing that the Department of Justice will not tolerate assaults against law enforcement. In subsequent posts, Bondi released the names of those arrested and graphic material related to the arrests.

The protests intensified after a series of recent violent incidents linked to federal immigration operations. For the Trump administration, these events demonstrate an increasingly dangerous scenario for the agents who enforce immigration law, one of the central priorities of the government.

From the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security, the authorities have reiterated that the right to peaceful protest is protected, but that any form of violence or attack against federal agents constitutes a serious crime. Government officials have emphasized that law enforcement will be strict and that citizenship or political activism doesn't exempt anyone from criminal responsibility.

Among those arrested are U.S. citizens, which, according to the administration, reinforces the principle that no one is above the law. A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security recalled that "anyone who assaults a law enforcement officer will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law", in line with the stance maintained by President Trump since the beginning of his term.

The White House believes that a forceful response is necessary to prevent an escalation of violence and to protect both the agents and the civilian population. Allowing attacks against federal officials would undermine the rule of law and would encourage chaos in a context already marked by strong political polarization.

With these actions, the Trump administration reinforces its "law and order" message and its commitment to the strict enforcement of immigration laws. The arrests in Minnesota are presented by the government as a clear signal that violent protests will not be tolerated and that the safety of federal agents will remain an absolute priority.
