The former Vélez coach, who won the championship with the club in 2024, has reached a verbal agreement with Néstor Grindetti and will sign until December 2026

Independiente already has a replacement for Julio Vaccari after the defeat against Banfield: Gustavo Quinteros will be Rojo's next coach. The agreement was finalized in a virtual meeting with president Néstor Grindetti and, according to various sources, the contract will run until December 2026, when the current board's term ends.
For logistical reasons, the 60-year-old coach from Santa Fe will not be present next weekend at the Libertadores de América against San Lorenzo, since he is currently abroad and will only return to the country on the 23rd. In that match, Carlos Matheu and Eduardo Tuzzio will serve as the interim duo in charge.
Quinteros no debutaría con San Lorenzo
This situation could result in Quinteros making his debut in none other than the clásico against Racing, on Sunday, September 28 at the Cilindro de Avellaneda for the tenth round of the Clausura.
Quinteros's recent steps before arriving at Rojo
Quinteros returns to Argentine soccer after a brief spell at Gremio of Brazil in 2025, where he only managed 17 matches (10 wins, 4 draws, and 3 losses). Previously, at Vélez, he left a great impression: he won the 2024 Professional League, reached the final of the Copa Argentina, and managed to have the team play attractive soccer, with a record of 28 victories, 13 draws, and 9 defeats in 50 matches.
Quinteros fue campeón con Vélez
After leaving Vélez, he was mentioned as a candidate at Boca following Fernando Gago's resignation, but Juan Román Riquelme chose Miguel Ángel Russo. He was also on Colo-Colo's radar and was considered by the national teams of Chile and Peru.
Last August, the coach had confessed his desire to return: "Right now I'd like to wait for something interesting from Argentine soccer. I spent many years abroad and my idea is to be with my family." Now, that wish will come true on Independiente's bench.
