The governor of the state of New York put a stop to the delusional expectations of the communist Muslim to make the buses 'free.'

The political confrontation between New York's Democratic governor, Kathy Hochul, and New York's mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani, a figure from the Democratic Socialist wing, intensified next weekend after Hochul publicly rejected Mamdani's plan to offer "free" transportation on city buses, a proposal valued at $700 million.

During a press conference at the SOMOS political retreat, held in Puerto Rico, Hochul made it clear that her priority is to maintain the financial stability of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), which relies on fares to sustain its operations.

"We're spending a lot of money, so I can't propose a plan right now that takes funds away from a system that depends on bus and subway fares," the governor warned, distancing herself from one of Mamdani's main projects.

Although she added that she seeks to make transportation "more affordable" for those who need it, she made it clear that total gratuity is not viable in the current context of deficit and high public investment.

Mamdani, avoiding direct confrontation with Hochul, replied evasively: "I'm still excited about making buses faster and free, and I appreciate the governor's collaboration on that affordability agenda."

However, his optimistic tone contrasts with the growing frustration within the Democratic Party itself, where moderate and economic leaders question the cost and feasibility of his socialist agenda.

The distance between both politicians is particularly ironic: Hochul supported Mamdani during his campaign, leveraging his popularity among progressive voters, but now rejects most of his proposals, which depend on tax increases for large fortunes and corporations.

The mayor-elect's plan includes about $10 billion in "free" programs, which include fare-free transportation and universal childcare. Hochul considers such ideas politically attractive but fiscally irresponsible.

The governor also faces a political dilemma: although state legislative leaders, Carl Heastie (Assembly) and Andrea Stewart-Cousins (Senate), have been more receptive to Mamdani's proposals, the real power of execution lies in Albany, where Hochul can block any measure she considers excessive. In that sense, her statement in Puerto Rico was a clear message to the party's socialists: without fiscal discipline, no negotiation is possible.

Tensions became visible during the SOMOS event, where Mamdani's supporters interrupted the governor several times, chanting "Tax the rich!" ("¡Cobren impuestos a los ricos!").

Hochul, visibly irritated, replied: "The more you pressure me, the less I'm going to do what you want." The phrase was interpreted as an open rejection of the party's socialist wing and a reminder of her political independence from the more radical sectors.

Nevertheless, Hochul did not completely close the door to cooperation. In her speech, she reiterated her commitment to expanding access to free childcare, another of Mamdani's flagship issues, although she warned that it is a project with enormous fiscal cost, about $15 billion, equivalent to all the state's reserves, so its full implementation could take years.

"We'll be on the path to achieving it, because I'm committed as the 'mom governor.' But doing it right now, at the state level, is impossible," she explained.

After the SOMOS retreat, Hochul traveled to the Dominican Republic to attend a cultural gathering with the Dominican community, a key electorate for her reelection in 2026. The governor seeks to strengthen her image as a pragmatic and moderate leader, in contrast to Mamdani's maximalist and costly proposals.
