Zedillo accuses Sheinbaum of destroying democracy and repeating AMLO's lies
The former president warns that Mexico is heading toward an authoritarian regime under Morena
Former President Ernesto Zedillo launched a harsh criticism against the Morena government, led by Claudia Sheinbaum. Zedillo accused Sheinbaum of reproducing the same lies as her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
In a forceful statement, Zedillo warned that the Mexican democracy has been destroyed by the ruling movement and cautioned that the country is heading toward a police and authoritarian regime.

Zedillo, a frequent target of attacks from the ruling party, decided to respond firmly this time.
"Democracy in Mexico, achieved only toward the end of the 20th century thanks to the participation of many generations, has been destroyed by Morena. And it was destroyed under the instructions of its founder and still real leader, López Obrador"
the former president stated.
"Sheinbaum doesn't respond with reasons, but with slander"
The former president also directly criticized Sheinbaum for avoiding the substantive debate. He pointed out that instead of presenting arguments, the president has chosen to repeat the falsehoods of her predecessor. Like López Obrador, Sheinbaum is using demagoguery as a mechanism to deceive the people.
"She has preferred to reiterate, almost verbatim, the falsehoods that her predecessor expressed for many years", accused Zedillo.

The statement comes in the context of the controversial judicial election on June 1, promoted by Morena. The election has been described by various experts as an attempt to control the Judiciary from the Executive.
Zedillo warned that this process not only lacks transparency, but represents a trial to dismantle the Mexican electoral system.
"The judicial election is questionable. There will be no transparency. It will be decided in secret who the new judges and ministers will be"
the former president warned.

Fobaproa, Tren Maya, and the hypocrisy of the audit
Zedillo also defended his role in the Fobaproa issue, usually used by Morena as a political weapon. He stated that at the time he did allow international audits, and challenged the current government to subject its megaprojects to the same scrutiny.
"I propose that the procedure of an independent, international auditor without a conflict of interest be applied to AIFA, the Tren Maya, and COVID management"

The comparison is direct: Morena demands accountability from the past, but refuses to provide it in the present.
The ruling party seeks to weaken the INE, capture the Judiciary and concentrate power and Zedillo's statements summarize what many remain silent about. It is a fact that in Mexico, democracy is at risk, it has already been hit, they want to capture it and push it into the abyss.
